Cauliflower Building Blocks Part Five - Markets

Yet again I set of to write on a particular topic and ended up down a rabbit hole.  This post was meant to be just a little piece about the Village markets, instead the more I thought about what to write it ended up as a post about another of Cauliflower's building blocks.  There is no denying that the roots of Cauliflower are firmly fixed in our experiences of artisan markets.  I will save the celebration of the abundance of little markets in Havelock North for another day It can all be traced back to selling honey with my bee keeping Dad at local markets.  Back then I made all my kids clothing when they were tiny, and it seemed logical...

Cauliflower Building Blocks Part 4 - John Lewis

This seems to be turning into 'Shops I have loved' not building blocks.  But how could I leave out The John Lewis Partnership.  My favourite department store.  Not only do I love the shop, but also the innovative business model.  It's run on the basis of a partnership, where every employee is both a partner in the business and a shareholder in the business.  They have the right to vote on important issues and receive a share of the profits each year.  The founder John Lewis himself was not a great employer, but his son John Spedan Lewis was the social reformer.  You can read more about them over here. John Lewis is a building block for Cauliflower for a number...

Cauliflower Building blocks part 3 - IKEA

Ikea came late to Edinburgh and truth be told we had never heard of it, and only went along because of the hype. Situated on the edge of town it was easy just to pop in on the way home, the meandering...

Cauliflower Building Blocks - Part Two The Good Life

Knitted cushions are selling out as quickly as they come into the shop at the moment (long may that last).  Which means I am forced to sit with my feet up knitting to all hours, its a tough life.  This week, to while away the hours I have been watching old reruns of "The Good Life".    There are some classic episodes in there.   Not only do I really enjoy seeing those 70's fashions and attitudes again.  I also saw for the first time some of the building blocks of how I want to live my life.  No, I don't really want to run a self sufficient household.  See picture below of our veggie plot.  But I would like to live...

Cauliflower building blocks : Part One - Habitat

This series of posts did start of as a round up of the influences that inspire us at Cauliflower.  Then it grew, looped back and became a bit of a - where were we actually going with this.  Till eventually, it became not just the inspiration, but the actual building blocks from our life's that make Cauliflower............. well Cauliflower. Before starting this series of posts I had no idea how much of a big influence Habitat had been.  I had forgotten just how much browsing time was spent there in the late 70's early 80's.  When many of my contemporaries were browsing the latest hip and trendy clothing stores, I was hanging out at the Habitat store in the West...
